Retirement and Relocation: What's Next in My Journey?

Writer: Denise YeagerDenise Yeager

Welcome to my journey of restructuring my life after some major changes. In our family, I was the caregiver. I didn't mind; I was in health care and lived closest to our parents, and it worked out. When my father died at age 93, I found that I could retire. I took the chance to change my surroundings and how I lived.

I had been a single parent to three, and they were grown and settled, mostly, and I decided to do something on my own. The town where I had raised my children was in a university town, and life was much structured to being associated with the university, and I wasn't. One thing that was clear to me is that when you age, it is better to have family around. Not to take care of you, but to be there as backup and support.

The first thing I did was contact my siblings for their help in downsizing and selling our family home. We all knew this would be massive as it was 17 rooms, they had lived there for 45 years, and as Depression- children never threw anything away. So we got started. I will detail our journey with what worked, what didn't, what steps we took, and ones we wished we had not.

The first thing we did was to make sure we had a clear title. That may sound silly (after all, they lived there 45 years), but our BIL is a realtor, and he told us some horror stories. The next thing was to have a home inspection to make sure the roof, plumbing and HVAC were in good working order. We then had it cleaned from top to bottom.

I will detail the steps we took in downsizing and packing in my next post, which will be on Thursday, March 13.

Thanks for reading and I hope you will return
